Ep. 146: Superstition Mountains – Lost Dutchman State Park | Arizona RV travel camping

Avatar admin | April 15, 2020

Lost Dutchman is one of Arizona's most popular state parks, and it's easy to see why. All 138 campsites, complete with water and electric hookups, have stunning views of the nearby Superstition Mountains. The park is named for the fabled Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine, which according to legend is a rich gold mine hidden in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix that many have tried to find for over 100 years.

We stay at Lost Dutchman State Park to explore the Superstitions, including hiking the Siphon Draw trail that departs right from the campground before crossing into the Superstition Wilderness of Tonto National Forest. It gains 2,500 feet of elevation in only three miles to reach the top of Flatiron for commanding views of the San Tan Valley.

We also explore the Apache Trail, an historic partially paved 46 mile-long state highway through the Superstition Mountains built in the 1920s that is now part of the National Forest Scenic Byway system. It follows the Salt River up past Canyon Lake and through Tortilla Flat to the Fish Creek Overlook. It normally continues to Theodore Roosevelt Lake, but remnants of a hurricane in September 2019 swept down burn scars left by a wildfire three months earlier, washing out portions of the Apache Trail and causing extensive damage that has prompted the state to close seven miles of the road indefinitely.

ABOUT US

Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.

We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.

We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!
