Ep. 140: Camping Safety & Security | RV monitoring remote cameras

Avatar admin | March 4, 2020

This week we're going to talk a bit more about security and personal safety while camping, and update you about how our perspective may have changed a bit after a situation in Texas this past fall hit a little too close to home for comfort: the murders of full-time RVers James & Michelle Butler of New Hampshire.

The Butlers had been boondocking just a mile or two north of our spot on the beach on Padre Island in south Texas. To make matters even worse, prior to boondocking on the beach we had stayed in a nearby county park campground, and looking through our video footage taken at that campground, we noticed that the Butlers had been occupying a campsite immediately adjacent to ours. When authorities released a photo of a suspect filmed driving the Butlers' truck and travel trailer across the U.S. border into Mexico, a man who we instantly recognized as a guy from Utah, Adam Curtis Williams, who had been camping just a few hundred yards south of our camp on Padre Island. We knew, because we had actually stopped to talk with him.

We don't need to tell you that this incident hit a bit too close to home, and it's given us reason to re-examine our position on personal safety while camping. Fortunately, looking at this rationally rather than emotionally, we don't have to change much. That said, there are reasonable precautions that we can take to improve our odds even further.

ABOUT US

Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.

We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.

We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!
